The room

By seven the gate is propped open and the counter is full. The kitchen has been going since the afternoon, and you can smell it from the lane.

The yard used to hold carts. The gate stayed, and so did the long wall, which now has the kitchen behind it. The tables came from a school that was clearing out.

Sit at the counter if you like to watch plates go out. Sit at a table if you'd rather talk. Nobody will mind which.

A drawing of the room, not to scale. The lit window is the one onto the lane.
